Manufacturing in California
With 30,000 manufacturing companies, California is the largest manufacturing state in the nation. Together, those companies support 1.3 million employees. Thirty-four percent of those workers are minority, and 31% are women. Nearly 800,000 Californians are employed in production-related occupations, garnering an average annual wage of nearly $45,000. Most of California’s manufacturing companies are small, with 64% having fewer than 25 employees. Manufacturing companies account for 11% of California’s total economic output. Their activity contributes to a balanced economic structure in the state and provides middle-skilled jobs that offer good incomes and upward mobility. Advanced manufacturing in San Diego
Advanced manufacturing in San Diego and across the nation is one of the most in-demand industries, but has been experiencing a shortage of skilled workers. For many years, employers have reported a sizable gap between the talent they need to keep growing their businesses and the pool of skilled employees. Over the next decade, this gap will equate to a $32 billion loss to the U.S. economy as manufacturing seeks offshore contracting to continue to grow their businesses. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are currently 1,321,300 manufacturing jobs in California and an average of 4,400 new job openings in manufacturing every month in 2018. Over the next decade, nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs likely need to be filled and the skills gap is expected to result in two million of those jobs going unfilled.
