We serve the community by addressing two key issues: 

1. The shortage of skilled labor in advanced manufacturing, and
2. Improving equitable access to high-paying, in-demand jobs available in the industry. 

We serve 40+ individuals and administer 2-3 cohorts annually. 

Since our inception in 2014, we have served more than 250 individuals across 16 cohorts, achieving a 90% job placement rate for program graduates.

Statement of Need:

Advanced manufacturing is a vital part of the economy and national security supply chain, but it is facing an urgent and ongoing crisis of skilled labor shortage. Immediate intervention is essential to prevent further deterioration over the next decade, which could endanger the national security supply chain and harm our economy. The sector provides 115,000 jobs in the San Diego region, and 8% of all advanced manufacturing jobs in California. 

Strategic Approach: 

AMI-SD carries out its mission by:

• Accessible Training Programs: Offers no-cost, tuition-free advanced manufacturing training to unemployed and underemployed adults, veterans, and workforce-bound students, removing economic barriers to career entry.
• Industry-Aligned Curriculum: Provides hands-on training tailored to meet the needs of regional manufacturers, especially for middle-skill jobs that require post-secondary education but not a four-year degree.
• Equitable Recruitment: Focuses on inclusive outreach to ensure diverse individuals have access to career pathways in advanced manufacturing.
• Employer Engagement: Assists manufacturers in recruiting and developing a skilled local talent pipeline, helping sustain regional industry and strengthen the national security supply chain.
